© Georges De KinderLocated in the city center of Brussels, close to Brussels-South Station, the Liverpool Park used to be urban wasteland. Today it has been transformed into a recreational, eco-friendly green space. Initiated in 2010 by the District Contract ‘Lemmens’, this new green lung has been created in close cooperation with the inhabitants and users of the neighbourhood in order to provide a real breath of fresh air in the dense fabric of this industrial area of Brussels. Inspired by a program defined together with public participation, the park offers a variety of recreational functions meant for diverse visitors. A playground, sports ground, table games and a water garden form a playful project that is built around a winding path for people with reduced mobility.

© Bureau B+BThe nautical character of Zierikzee is still conspicuous in the centre and the relationship with water is strong, partly due to the visible ebb and flow of the tides. The small city owes its monumental, richly decorated houses to a history of sea trade. Where fishing villages can sometimes be sober in their expression, Zierikzee seems to possess a rich culture of beautification.

© Daniela ValentiniThe courtyard, a compact cube of approximately 30 x 30 x 30 metres, embodies a sense of sanctity. It has been created through the convalescence of various architectural facades that stand in stark contrast to one another in terms of material and topographical design. These surfaces complement the light shell limestone floor, which is home to a built-in water feature. The ever-changing light reflects in dynamic patterns against the facades, imbuing the space with theatrical movement.

A narrow 69,000 sf parking lot has been expanded through creative planning into a 105,526 sf park that re-imagines the threshold between the city and the Hudson in a sustainable and meaningful way.
